I bought my Nokia E70 in September and have since had to learn avoiding the bug's of it's 1.0 firmware
- Symbian S60 3:rd Edition have a nice way of organizing all the features. But E70 have been slow to an uncomfortable extent when using the menus, and awfully slow (5-10 sec) when flipping up the keyboard which triggers the swich from portrait to landscape screen mode.
- Multi tasking is great (press the applications button a second or so to bring up the switching menu). But launching of multiple programs will quickly chew up all the memory, often causing the active program to crash, sometimes affecting the ones in the backgrund as well...
- The browser is wonderful for it's CSS and JavaScript capabilities (it's based on the same components Apple's browser Safari uses). And to control the pointer with a tiny joystick works suprisingly well. But load a large website and you run out of memory. If you're lucky the broken, semi-loaded page you tried to access is still readable. But often times the whole browser goes down.
- Somewhere between the Fring- and Jaiku installation sessions during Winter, the browser stopped working completely. Uninstalling the 3rd party apps did not solve the issue, the browser still refused to launch.
I have tried updating the firmware several times only to get the response that no updates are available, even though the version in the phone is 1.0610.05.07 from May 2006.
Today I found a Windows equipped PC (no OS X-support for the firmware upgrade procedure), downloaded and installed the Nokia PC Suite and connected the phone using the USB cable included with the phone. Then I made a backup of SMS messages, settings etc. using the PC Suite and an extra backup to the memory card (Menu->Tools->Memory->Select->Copy int. memory). Finally I tried updating and still got the "no updates available" message.
However, somwhere around the fourth of fifth click on the "retry"-button, it suddenly realised there is a 3.0633.09.04 version out there. (Possibly, but not likely, related to the fact that I around that time used the *#0000#-code to double check the old firmware info and the fact that I swiched the phone to "offline" mode).
10 minutes later the firmware update was completed and the phone rebooted.
Now I'm curious to find out if the issues mentioned above are addressed. At least the menus and the layout switching seem to be considerably more responsive!
